This block of instruction will introduce the student to terms and definitions used in crisis negotiations.  The course will give the student a basic understanding of negotiation skill sets and techniques.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learner will understand how to introduce themselves in establishing rapport. They will also understand the Stockholm Syndrome. 
  • Learner will understand the importance of eliciting self-interest to find common ground for resolving a hostage or barricade incident.
  • Learner will understand how to use active listening, minimization, minimal encouragers, principle of reciprocity, threat assessment, and conflict resolution techniques to bring negotiations to a successful conclusion.
